How to Change Windshield Wipers: A Quick Guide

Windshield wipers wiping raindrops

Most windshield wipers are vetted for at least six months of service, although a high-quality set will make it for twelve months and beyond. However, if you live in an area prone to extreme heat, below-freezing temperatures, substantial amounts of rain and snow, or close to the ocean, your wipers could wear prematurely. This quick guide will help East Moline drivers check their wipers regularly and teach them how to change windshield wipers. Remember, you can always order your windshield wipers from our parts department. We even change wipers upon request in one of our service bays.

How to Tell When It’s Time to Change Your Wipers

Many Rock Island drivers commonly make the mistake of waiting to hear their wipers streaking against the glass until they decide to change them. While this indicates wipers gone bad, there are several other ways to check for routine wear. Be mindful of the following signs regarding wiper replacement:

  • Cracked rubber or noticeable pieces of rubber debris left behind
  • Blades separated from the wiper arm
  • Loud screeching noises when you operate your wipers
  • Gaps when you operate your wipers that normally wipe clean
  • Unusual scratches on your windshield
  • Visibly loose blades

If you notice any of the issues listed above, lift your wiper and clean any dirt and debris from the blades. Replace with new wipers if the problem persists after cleaning.

How Much Will It Cost To Change Wipers?

Windshield wipers are luckily one of the most inexpensive components for your vehicle. At Green Family Hyundai, we offer Milan customers periodic parts specials to make wiper blades even more affordable. After purchase, you can request a technician to help with your wiper blade installation, or you can choose to tackle the job yourself.

Follow the steps below to learn how to change your windshield wipers.

How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Use these easy-to-follow steps for learning how to change windshield wipers.

  1. Position your wipers in the upright position.
  2. Carefully separate them from the windshield. They should be almost fully perpendicular to your windshield.
  3. Different models have different wiper installations. Consult your owner’s manual for specific removal instructions. Near the bottom of your wiper, there’s either a tab you must depress to release a clip, or you’ll simply pull the blades down to unhook them from your wiper arms.
  4. Inspect the old blades to ensure they were indeed bad, and the issues aren’t stemming from another source.
  5. Clean your windshield thoroughly with high-quality glass cleaner before installing the new blades.
  6. According to the owner’s manual, install the new blades until you hear them click into place and push them back into the operational position.

The entire process should take no more than ten minutes from start to finish. If you’d rather have one of our technicians handle it, you can always schedule service, and we’ll have you in and out with little wait time.
