How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

Your transmission is one of the most critical parts of your vehicle, so keeping up with routine maintenance is a must. One easy, yet important, task is to check your transmission fluid on a regular basis. So, how often do you check your transmission fluid? It is a good idea to check the main fluids in your vehicle on a monthly basis, and this includes the transmission fluid. Transmission fluid should be drained and replaced with fresh fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Be sure to check your owner’s manual to see if there are different recommendations from the manufacturer. Not sure how to check transmission fluid? Step-by-Step Guide on How to Check Transmission Fluid

Learn how to check transmission fluid in no time by following these simple steps:

  1. Before you check the transmission fluid, make sure that the engine is warmed up a bit. Let it run a few minutes before proceeding. Put the car in park, then step out of the vehicle and open the hood.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. Not sure where to find it? If you have a front-wheel drive car, it will most likely be found just to the right of the oil dipstick.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid. Move it around between your thumb and forefinger. Check its appearance as well. It should be nearly clear with just a hint of pink. If it looks dirty or has a burnt smell, it is a sign that it needs to be replaced.
  4. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag before putting it back in place. Take it out once more to inspect the level. If the fluid falls under the “Full” marking, more transmission fluid is needed.
  5. Add more transmission fluid with a funnel, but do it carefully to avoid overfilling.

Transmission Fluid Basics

Because the transmission is such a complex piece of machinery, there are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes time to change your transmission fluid:

  • Not all transmission fluid is the same. When your vehicle was produced and the type of transmission it has determines the type of fluid that is needed.
  • Checking the fluid on a manual transmission will usually require a jack to access a plug located beneath the car. This can be a hassle for many East Moline and Rock Island drivers. Our service department can handle this task for you
  • Is your vehicle hesitating before shifting gears? Low transmission fluid could be the culprit. Because this is a sign of a more serious issue as well, it is best to have your vehicle looked at by a professional.
